Behavioral Parent Training

Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) is an evidence-based treatment for parents who have children or teens with problematic behavior. Programs are designed to help parents learn effective behavior management techniques to increase positive interactions with their child and reduce the occurrence of their child’s challenging behavior. Problem Solving with Kids and Families

Teaching kids how to problem solve is a proven method for reducing disruptive behavior, preventing future antisocial behavior, reducing victimization and bullying, and increasing social competence. Learning effective problem-solving skills can also help kids manage anxiety and deal with “set-backs.”

When families participate in problem solving sessions with their child, they learn how to resolve specific disputes, listen effectively, and come up with solutions that make sense for everyone. Dr. Selman utilizes the following research-supported problem-solving strategies and interventions when working with children, teens, and their families.

Problem Solving Communication Training

Helping families communicate more effectively is typically a component of parent training and parent-child sessions. The goal is for families to problem-solve, negotiate, actively listen to one another, and communicate more effectively. Though traditionally geared toward parents and adolescents, Problem Solving Communication Training has been applied with great efficacy to families with younger children as well.

Collaborative Problem Solving

Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) utilizes a structured problem-solving approach to engage parents and their child in the process of resolving conflict in a connective, non-punitive, caring way. CPS is guided by the philosophy that “children do well when they can,” and that kids who exhibit challenging behavior do so because they are lacking the critical skills necessary to communicate and resolve problems that occur under certain conditions, especially those that elicit frustration or stress. The model focuses on identifying a child’s lagging skills, the expectations he or she is having difficulty meeting, and teaching parents and their child a collaborative way to come up with solutions that make sense. CPS is an evidence-based approach to working with individuals with a range of diagnoses, including ADHD, Autism, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder, and mood disorders.
